History of Harvest Share

Happy to receive her holiday meal

The Harvest Share program began in 2022 with the first holiday meal delivery on Thanksgiving that year. The Knights of Columbus had wanted to bring traditional holiday meals to the most vulnerable. When new member Curt Nelson of Just Serve learned of this, he spearheaded the effort and brought in additional resources from the Bishop's Storehouse. The first meals were packed on bleachers at the sports field and delivered to 80 homes in 2022.

Two years later, this program is now serving 400 residents in need with meals at Thanksgiving, Christmas, Easter, Memorial Day, and Labor Day.

For the first two years, all of this growth was handled by a group of volunteers that were not a formal entity. To handle growth, Harvest Share officially became a program of the Future Forward Foundation (3F).

The Thanksgiving donation of 2023 saw an amazing coalition of businesses, churches, school district, Chamber of Commerce, banks, the town and the three food distribution companies all asking for a way to contribute. Nine locations collected over 300 of different items to fill the Thanksgiving dinners. This weaving together of so many types of Florence organizations amazed everyone.

With 35,000 homes scheduled to be built in Florence within the next decade, Harvest Share expects another doubling of those in need of meals within the next two years. All of the original Harvest Share members still plan and pack the meals. Everyone is welcome to be part of this community effort.
